The Laws that Govern

If you saw this post title and were hoping for a political post, I am sorry to inform you that you’ve been let down. I really have no desire to consider or be involved in politics at this stage in my life. Perhaps someday I will, as some surely hope, “come around” and see how much I can “impact the world” by getting involved. For now, however, I’m thinking more along the lines of self-imposed laws that govern my personal life. I think we each have our own moral codes and personal laws... rules that we are far more apt to follow than the laws that we sign our lives to or the ones imposed upon us by the governmental forces that be. Listed below are just ten of my personal laws. Things that, upon self-observation, I generally stick to.

1. If you know what you are looking for, don’t compromise a bit
2. When avoidable, never drink water from the tap
3. Be honest – about your faults, questions, motives and actions
4. Never make your bed
5. If going to someone’s facebook page would more than likely cause you to judge (either mentally or verbally) that person, just don’t click it
6. If fun things are going on, sleep can wait
7. If it’s fun or beautiful, get a picture
8. Never wear the same pair of earrings two days in a row
9. Doodle in church; it helps you listen
10. Do your best to save your money for the big things

I'm sure we all have more self-appointed rules than we’d like to admit. From small things like how we lick our stamps or what shelf we keep the milk on to big things such as how we capture our dreams or maintain our integrity.

What rules govern your life on a daily basis?

  2. 3, 4, and 10 would probably be on my list, too.

2 is the opposite of my life story...born and raised on the tap.

    Some of mine might include...

Park your car as far away from the store as you need to to get a pull-through space.

Always be nice to cashiers; it's the least I can do.

Doing your research (internet, phone calls) ahead of time can save quite a few disappointing return trips in the car.

Enjoy being asked for your ID while it lasts.

Whenever an option, Korean Air is THE way to fly.

Shave whenever you do--or don't--feel like it.

  3. *thinks*

    1. If you're putting away clothes, you HAVE to put them where they belong.

    2. Always condition twice, even if you're running out of hot water.

    3. Run, if it's cold out, you must run.

    4. You musn't be late.

    5. Shopping is fun, even if you can't buy anything, you should still go more often than not.

    6. Sleep is needed, even if there is something fun going on. Can't enjoy it if you're tired.
    ; )

    7. Don't hold back. Talk about how you feel or what's on your mind, there's no sense in holding it in.

    8. Always leave the shades open.

    9. Plan your outfit the night before, otherwise you can't sleep because you're thinking about it.

    10. Watch people, it's impolite to stare, but it's not to casually watch several people at once.

  4. 1. Whenever walking into a classroom or lecture hall, always try to sit in the rear corner. This way you can observe not only the main speaker, but, by turning only slightly to the left or right, everyone in the room as well. This was always sort of a subconscious rule, until i realized how much I like to observe people, and finally put it together.

    2. Always guzzle juice. As long as it appears to be a legitimate fruit juice of some kind. I don’t care if sugar is sugar, I refuse to guzzle the juice of the high fructose corn fruit. It somehow seems less healthy, and that’s all there is to it.

    3. Always make semi-elaborate doodles while the other person is talking during a phone conversation. If you know that you’ll have to write something down, you need to warm up your fingers while you wait. If you don’t have a writing utensil, then pace. Walk upstairs and down, all around the house if you have to. You must feel like you are on the way from one place to the next for your mind to work best.

    4. There is no point in trying to eat half a doughnut. It’s a ridiculous proposition.

    5. When meeting a new group of peers, always sit back for the most part and let the ‘talkers’ talk all they like. Absorb what there is to absorb, and then put your two cents in.

    6. Always pet a good dog on the head. Cats as well.

    7. Look people right in the eyes, as much as you can get away with. (When you’re talking.) Their reaction to that can be very telling.

    8. Measure once, cut once and a half.

    9. Help other people. Just helping yourself gets real boring, no matter how much you have to do.

    10. Always budget 30% extra. This applies with time and money. The time part is a new rule for me.
